Molluscum
Contagiosum is a viral skin infection characterized by round, firm, painless
bumps on the skin. These bumps can vary in size from as small as a pinhead to
the size of a pencil eraser. If the bumps are scratched or injured, the
infection can spread to nearby skin areas. Molluscum contagiosum is transmitted
through person-to-person contact or contact with infected objects. While it is
most common in children aged 1 to 10 years, it can also affect adults,
especially those with weakened immune systems. When the infection involves the
genitals, it is considered a sexually transmitted infection. The causative
agent is the molluscum contagiosum virus, a type of poxvirus. The infection
remains contagious until the eruptions resolve.
